Full 1912 Catalog M Smithsonian American History Museum. Note Four slide rule models are described in this catalog. | Central Scientific Company was founded in 1900 in downtown Chicago. It was created from of what was left of the Olmstad Scientific Company. Central Scientific manufactured and distributed science teaching equipment for schools, colleges, and universities by catalog mail order. The trademark CENCO was used from 1909 onwards. CENCO dominated the field of selling science education equipment through their mail order catalog. By 1935, the company established itself as one of the leading national suppliers of science equipment. During World War II, part of the manufacturing facility was turned over to the production of war necessities, making bombsights for airplanes and fuses for large bombs. After 1968, the company began having financial difficulties. In 1974, the assets were sold off to competitors. The educational business retained the name Central Scientific Company. In April 1979, Central Scientific's assets and activities were acquired by two businessmen from Buffalo, New York. They sold the business to Sargent-Welch (their main competitor) in 2000. |

Formed in 1917 by James W. Dieterich (abt 1889 - died?) and Rudolph Post. Historical background notes: In 1911, James W. Dieterich, had worked his way up to blueprint foreman at B.L. Makepeace Co., then went west to land a job as a salesman with the K&E branch in San Francisco. Jacob and Charles Bruning, in Chicago, bought out W. B. Huey's interest in American Blueprint Co. in 1914. After the America Blueprint Co. buyout, W.B. Huey and A.W. Huey acquire the coating rights to Bruning products and start the Huey Company in 1915. By 1917, Rudolph Post, nephew of Charles Bruning, recruited Jim Dieterich from K&E and obtained financing for a blueprint operation from his uncle. Later in the year, the two buy out Bruning's interest and form Dieterich-Post Company. Slide rules were a monor part of the office supply business and DIEPO OEM'd from other companies like Pickett & Eckel, Inc in Chicago, Charles Bruning in California and Albert Nestler in Germany. On Wednesday, October 22, 1947, a U.S. federal trademark registration was filed for DIEPO by Dieterich-Post Company, San Francisco. The USPTO has given the DIEPO trademark serial number of 71538617. The federal status of this trademark filing expired 11/3/1992. The Dieterich-Post Company was still operating in Monterey Park, California in 2010. The Dieterich-Post website, at the time, stated that 2010 is its 93rd year of doing business. DIEPO continued a relationship with Charles Bruning Co. (C.B.Co.) evidenced by a 1950's rebranded slide rule made by C.B.Co. By 2011 Dieterich-Post Co. was acquired by American Reprographics Co and all historical information about Dieterich-Post had been deleted from its website.

William Fisher 1838-1906 Jasper H. Fisher 1878-1938 Jasper W. Fisher 1914-1990 |
The Fisher Controls Company, is one of the oldest and largest global designers, manufacturers, and suppliers of control valves and regulators to the chemical, refining, power, and pulp and paper industries. Founded in 1880 by William Fisher (1838-1906), William moved to the US from England when he was 14, settling in Iowa. His first job was in a small engine shop, where he became well-versed in steam power. Next, he helped to install new water facilities in three Iowa cities and made a name for himself.
As a raging fire in Marshalltown, Iowa, threatened to engulf the city, William and a few others spent hours throttling the city’s steam-driven pumps by hand, to provide steady and constanst water pressure. This fire inspired him to create a control device to control pumps and maintain them at constant pressure. After months of experimentation, Fisher built the Fisher Type 1 constant pressure pump governor in 1880. Fisher Governor Company was incorporated in 1888 .
By 1905, company sales had reached $44,000; by 1907, his invention was in power plants throughout the entire United States, Canada, and Great Britain. And the two of them oversaw some of Fisher’s most significant advancements and growth. Fisher Governor Company enjoyed substantial profits from the development of steel, petroleum, power, and gas in the 1920’s industrial boom. Their valves being indispensable in each of the burgeoning industries. With the onset of World War 1, demand for Fisher’s products in various industries rose dramatically, particularly in the petroleum industry. As a result, the Company quickly grew from a shop of nine machinists and five office employees to over 60 workers. In 1938 then VP, Jasper Henry Fisher (1878-1938), son of William, died. His wife, Florence Edna Baughman Fisher (1879-1960) served as President for 10 years. Jasper’s son, Jasper “Bill” Fisher, (1914-1990) became VP, and his wife, Dorothy Elizabeth Meyer Fisher (1914-1998), like Jasper’s mother before her, took over as President. Fisher entered into a licensing agreement with Elliott Automation of the UK in 1950, the two companies would manufacture Fisher valves and controllers jointly. It was about this time that the company contracted with Pickett to make custom slide rules. Other makers soon followed in the UK and Germany with their own design variations. In 1955, Fisher expanded production into Canada, opening a factory in Ontario to meet the demands of the burgeoning oil and natural gas industries. Fisher’s emphasis on new products built on further technological advancement continued throughout the 1960s, and they entered into a new licensing agreement to manufacture in Japan. The following year, 1965, Fisher opened a factory in Mexico City. |

The Foxboro Company was founded in 1908 by brothers Edgar Heil Bristol and Bennet B. Bristol as the Industrial Instrument Co. who were machinists for their father's Bristol Company. In 1914 it was renamed Foxboro, after the town. By 1915, Buick, Edison, Ford, and Firestone are among their many customers. In the 1940's Foxboro joinied the war effort, using its manufacturing expertise to build highly complex torpedo mechanisms. During the 1950's, Foxboro made advances in miniaturization leading the shift from large case recorder/controllers and local control to centralized control rooms. They developed a series of slide rules to assist gas engineers in sizing control valves and in performing calculations relating to orifice meters. These devices were not widely used in gas distribution except for the design of those city gate stations using orifice meter runs to measure the flow of gas. Note: Sizing control valves usually involved solving for the valve's Cv based on flow rate, flowing temperature, specific gravity, and upstream and downstream pressures. The most common orifice meter calculation involved solving for the "beta ratio" or "beta" (the ratio between the diameter of the orifice and the inside diameter of the meter run pipe, or "d/D") given the maximum flow, flowing temperature, specific gravity of the gas, static pressure and line size of the run. Refer to the companion book Principles and Practice of Flow Meter Engineeringby L. K. Spink. |

He departed J&L in 1983 to restructure the United States Steel Corporation, where he served as president of the U. S. Steel Group of USX Corp. until 1991. Over that period, finished products went from 8 man-hours per ton down to 4 man-hours per ton, contributing to a dramatic swing in profitability for the company. Graham had similar results as chairman and CEO of Washington Steel Co. (1991-1992). From 1992 to 1994, Graham Sr. was president and CEO of Armco Steel Co. L.P., predecessor of AK Steel. He was the founder and served as chairman and chief executive officer of AK Steel Corp. (1994-1995), and remained as chairman until his retirement in 1997. After his arrival at Armco Steel in 1992, the company went from being the least profitable U.S. steel company to earning the most profit per ton, and producing steel with the fewest man-hours per ton, of any of its major competitors over the following five years. He is now with TC Graham Associates as a founding member.Mr. Graham is a Korean war veteran. |

On an October 4, 1938 letter from A.W.Keuffel to W.L.E.Keuffel, AWK writes:"Mr. Misik advises that one of our employees, Mr. Katzenmair, informed him that the makers of the INDECO Rule, which was made in Bridgeport, Ct., have gone out of business. Mr. Katzenmair received this information from someone acquianted with the owners of INDECO, who advised him that the owner had spent all of his wife's money in promoting this rule without success and had finally given up making them." Culbertson Oceanographic Slide Rule Made in USA by KAHLSICO, Kahl Scientific Intrument Corp, El Cajon, CA (1955) The 8-3/8 inch diameter slide rule is designed to facilitate computation of the three basic quantities of physical oceanography, temperature, depth, and salinity. Scale Symbols and definitions: C = correction for thermal expansion of a protected thermometer system subsequent to reversal Vo = a constant of the individual thermometer, representing in degrees the volume of mercury below the 0° mark when the thermometer is in the reversed position at 0° Centigrade T' = reading of the reversing thermometer, either protected or unprotected t = reading of the auxiliary thermometer which accompanies each reversing thermometer, (that is, temperature at which reversing thermometer is read) K = reciprocal coefficient of thermal expansion of the glass of which the thermometer is made; K is given on the certificate which accompanies each thermometer Cu = correction for thermal expansion of an unprotected thermometer system subsequent to reversal Tw = water temperature in situ, the corrected reading of a protected reversing thermometer C' = value found as an intermediate step in the process of correcting an unprotected thermometer D = depth at which the thermometers reversed Tu = corrected reading of an unprotected reversing thermometer, a function of both temperature and pressure ρm = mean density of the water column above the level of reversal Q = pressure coefficient of the individual unprotected thermometer, expressed in degrees Centigrade increase in the reading per 0.1 kg/cm2 increase in pressure Wire length = length of wire from sea surface to water bottle Wire angle = angle which the Wire makes with the vertical at the ship Scan provided by the Steve Seale's collection |
The Kel-Co slide rules were the brainchild of A. Stuart Kelsy. They were produced in 1969-1971 in Plainview, NY by Kel-Co Publishing, his own firm. He later designed the Handicapping slide rule and later the 1979 electronic calculators made APF Electronics. |
A. Stuart Kelsey July 1980 Manufactured & Distributed by APF ELECTRONICS, INC. 1501 Broadway New York, New York 10036 Under license from Cannella Corp., Syracuse, N.Y. ©1979-1980 K-C Associates Pompano Beach, Florida. |
The following text is from the PREFACE to the Electronic Kel-Co calculator Manual (1MB PDF) Read the manual to understand the math behind the slide rules and calculator:
The Kel-Co Class Computer is based upon the
same principles as the Kel-Co Class Calculator (slide
rule). The calculator, first marketed in 1969, became
the most widely used handicapping aid in North
America, and was considered by most unbiased experts
as the most successful ever developed. The electronic
computer, by its very nature, is much easier to
use, more accurate, and much faster than the slide
rule. |

Kolesch and Company began in the late 1790s with Edmund March Blunt (1770-1862), who was a map maker in Massachusetts in 1793 and moved to New York in 1802.9 His shop in New York sold nautical books and charts, as well as pre-owned nautical instruments. Upon his retirement in 1822, his sons Edmund and George William took over the store by 1824, creating the firm E. & G.W. Blunt. This firm began offering nautical books, charts, and instruments as well as surveying equipment. Edmund began attempts to build a dividing engine in 1831 and successfully created an automated machine that was put into operation by 1857. His Automatic Dividing Engine is one of the first built in the United States, and E. & G. W. Blunt used the machine to manufacture theodolites for the Coast Survey instead of having to import them. The company remained in the family until 1868 at which time the firm, by then known as Blunt & Co., was passed to German immigrants, Eckel & Imhoff, and then F. Eckel. Finally, in 1885, Heinrich Adolph Kolesch (1855-1903) purchased the firm. Kolesch & Company, at 138 Fulton Street, New York, New York, remained in existence until 1947, though it was dissolved by proclamation at that time so it is not clear when they stopped selling instruments. In the early 1900s through roughly 1920, Kolesch sold drawing instruments and materials, surveying instruments, and accessories including slide rules. These rules are described in their catalogs from those years, which can still be found today, as well as in their publication, How To Use Slide Rules. Their slide rules were engraved with the Kolesch name, but were likely all imported. While never stated explicitly, these rules appear likely to have been manufactured by Albert Nestler in Germany. The D. Van Nostrand book company, was founded by Dutch American David van Nostrand (1811-1886) (see expanded Biography) in New York City, in 1848. In 1869, "Van Nostrand's Engineering Magazine" was founded, followed later by "The American Chemical Journal". Van Nostrand Publishing also became involved with the building of the Brooklyn Bridge by publishing John A. Roebling's "Long and Short Span Railway Bridges".During the late 19th century, They published books on slide rules as early as 1884.Van Nostrand Publishing initiated a book series on Science. The Science series was edited by George Plympton, professor of physics and engineering at the prestigious Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. The famous Van Nostrand Science Series had as many as 127 titles when it was completed in 1902. It was claimed that the Van Nostrand Science series helped educate a generation of engineers. The series was still being sold in the 1920s. Prior to WWII, they rebranded OEM slide rules.and packaged them as a point of sales item to sell their slide rule instruction books, such as Speed and Fun with Figures (1922). |

John L. Novotni (1893-1966), a blacksmith of Czech descent, is listed in the 1920 census as working in a foundry in Delaware County, Penn. In the 1910s, he worked at an automobile and wagon repair shop in Oaklyn, N.J., with Andrew W. Kelly and John Hornyak, who received a patent (U.S. Patent 1,210,488 issued January 2, 1917) for this design and sold it as the Kelkay Weight Slide Rule by 1920. By 1922 Kelly and Hornyak and Novotni were selling other celluloid rules, such as the Paper Box Board Rule. By 1929 Novotni was selling slide rules under the name of the Novotni Slide Rule Company and was having the rules made of Bakelite. It appears he lived in Chester, PA at that time. In 1937, he moved to Media, Pa. According to Novotni's daughter, Evelyn Novotni Bond, steel companies continued to purchase the Weight Slide Rule until 1992. Joseph Komorous's 1937 Patent US02,073,421. | The Parisian Novelty Company at 3510 S. Western Avenue in Chicago, was originally established in 1898, by Louis L Joseph, the American born son of a German immigrant. He produced a variety of novelties that could be used in advertising, many based on designs by inventor Joseph Komorous ( ?-1945), who was the manufacturing superintendent. J.Komorous has at least 18 U.S. patents, starting in 1915 through 1938, which include face powder compacts, watch fobs, office products, campaign buttons, and his slide rule Patent US02,073,421 of 1937. This patent is the basis for generic linear slide rules made by the Graphic Calculator Co, Whitehead & Hoag,, and C-Thru as the designs and construction are the same, made of thin 0.5mm(0.020inch) thick plastic. They were either licensed or the patent had expired. The Parisian Novelty Company Building was abandoned in 2008. See Collecting Vintage Compacts for a great history of their company. Joseph Komorous died in 1945 and their is evidence his son Louis J. Komorous filled in at Parisan Novelty as L.J. has a patent issued in 1952. Parisian Novelty became Matchless Parisian Novelty in 2008. |

Founded by Arthur Frederick Eckel - United States. Inventor and manufacturer. Originally of Chicago. Cofounded R.C.Pickett & A.F. Eckel Company in 1943 with Ross C.Pickett to make aluminum slide rules. while residing in Evanston, Illinois. He left the company in 1948, which was then renamed P&E. A 1949 U.S. patent #2466983 was issued to A.F. Eckel with Louise Pickett being the assignee. Has several other United States patents (US #2615630) and his wife Myrtle Elizabeth (Scott) Eckel is shown as the attorney. Eckel later formed Precision Scale Company located in Phoenix, Arizona, producing all-metal slide rules to limited markets. George Washington University in Washington D.C. shows an A.F. Eckel as having graduated there in 1922. His estate sale in Phoenix produced several unfinished slide rules. |

prestige. so much so that many business and industrial
executives were in danger of believing that their perplexing problems
of personnel, human relations and employer-employee
relations could be solved quickly and easily by merely calling in a
psychological consultant. The Psychological Corp lead the advancement of this field of pseudoscience.

The following excerpt is courtesy of Wikipedia.org: "Things of Science was an educational program launched by the nonprofit news syndicate Science Service in November 1940. The program consisted of a series of kits available by subscription and sent by mail monthly. The program continued until 1989. Each month, thousands of subscribers received a small blue box about the size of a videocasette containing some material such as nylon thread or dinosaur bones. The box contained a yellow booklet explaining the topic for that month, along with the pieces and supplies needed to cover the topic. Some kits would teach about a specific topic, such as coal or optical illusions. Other kits would provide parts to build items such as a small spectrograph, telescope, or pinhole camera. In addition to the monthly subscription, some kits were available for individual purchase, such as a "soilless gardening" unit which provided seeds, plant food, and instructions in hydroponics. The Things of Science Club was started by Watson Davis, editor-in-chief of Science Service, because editors served by the service often asked for samples of the things the syndicate wrote about. The initial focus of the program was newspaper editors, but it soon shifted to young people. By 1946 the Science Service estimated that half of its subscribers were school groups and science clubs, and the other half were individuals.[5] Membership in the club was limited to a few thousand because some of the "things", such as dinosaur bones, were hard to come by." There were three slide rule computational units. Unite 123 in 1958, Unit 209 in 1958, and Unit 272 in 1963. These used off-the shelf slide rules. There was a unit offerred in See more at Rediscovering Things of Science website by George B. Moody.

: Benjamin B. Bauer (originally Baumzweiger) - (1913-1979) He is the inventor of the Shure Brothers Reactance Slide Rule. He was a Russian-born American acoustic engineer, who worked as Chief Engineer for the Shure microphone company and produced over 100 patents. His early work in acoustics lead to the development of modern sound technology via the Uniphase Electrical Principle. This principle is the source of the famous Unidyne Microphone's name and functionality. Introduced in 1939, the Shure Unidyne is arguably the most recognized microphone in the world Shure was founded by Sidney N. Shure in 1925 as "The Shure Radio Company", selling radio parts kits several years after completely manufactured radios became commercially available. In 1931, Shure and engineer Ralph Glover began development of the first Shure microphone, and the following year, the Model 33N Two-Button Carbon Microphone was introduced, making Shure one of only four microphone manufacturers in the U.S.In 1941, Shure was contracted by the United States armed forces to supply microphones during World War II, and by the following year, the T-17B was the microphone most widely used by the U.S. Army and Navy. Shure also manufactured throat, headset, and oxygen mask microphones, and adopted the United States Military Standard for all Shure microphones.By the mid-1940s, More at Wikipedia |

Photos of Gilbert and Christine Small Gilbert Small (1885-1963) invented and manufactured The Small Calculator in 1917. Jonathan Small, his Grandson, writes: "The only tidbit I know about the Pocket Calculator is that my grandmother mentions in her diaries from the 1920s a number of occasions when she and my grandfather would spend an evening assembling calculators to fill orders. Gilbert Small was employed by an engineering firm by the name of Worcester with offices in Waltham and Boston." (Continued on right) | (Cont'd) "He was frequently required to make trips to Portland, ME, to inspect a bridge there (a bridge known as the 'Million Dollar Bridge', which has since been torn down). As a small child I knew my grandfather had invented the 'Small Pocket Calculator' because he had quite a few in stock in his home in Wayland, Massachusetts. His work was in the field of architecture for which he regularly commuted from Wayland (a suburb) to Boston by train. He was instrumental in designing the colonial style home (also in Wayland) where my parents brought up their family and lived well into their senior years, Sometimes my grandfather's work involved dismantling old historical New England homes. When this was the case he frequently salvaged and recycled useful building materials. In the case of my childhood home, this included massive exposed hand hewn beams in the living room. You could see the marks where someone had shaped the beams one axe blow after another. He also recuperated broad planks of red pine paneling and vintage bricks for that house. His architectural work prompted him to invent the 'Small Pocket Calculator'. He designed it in an era before wristwatches had come into vogue and it was common for men to carry a pocket watch. My grandfather wanted to make a calculator that would have the same small, round and convenient size and shape." |

Spirule is the invention of the late Walter Richard Evans (1920-1999), who was a noted American control theorist and the inventor of the root locus method in 1948. He received his B.E. in Electrical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis in 1941 and his M.E. in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1951. Evans worked as an engineer at several companies, including General Electric, Rockwell International, and Ford Aeronautic Company. He was the recipient of the 1987 American Society of Mechanical Engineers Rufus Oldenburger Medal and the 1988 AACC's Richard E. Bellman Control Heritage Award electrical engineer who developed the "Root-Locus Method" for designing automatic control systems. He then invented the Spirule to help "nail down specific points on the locus - to establish the gain to use and the exact natural frequency and damping that will result". This device was manufactured by Evans's company in the 60's, and 100,000 of them were actually shipped before personal computers took over. He wrote "Control System Dynamics" 1954, published by McGraw Hill,
