Charvoz-Roos Corporation, 50 Colfax Avenue, Clifton, New Jersey Charvoz-Roos - A U.S. distributor of drafting and engineering supplies based at one time in 50 Colfax Ave, Clifton, New Jersey, that sold Charvoz-Roos branded slide rules. In November, 1939, Charvoz, Inc., formed at 185 Hackensack Street in East Rutherford, NJ. as a joint venture between Andre Charvoz, president of Manufacture Francais de Compas of Ligney-en-Barre, France, and Samuel Sanders of Teaneck, N.J., president of L. Oppleman, Inc. The Roos Company of 280 Madison Ave., New York, was a partnership between Andre and Angele Charvoz, and Abel and Ethel R. Gottheimer, that was created (c1941) to manufacture painted wood and laminated wood slide rules in the United States presumably to replace foreign imports of slide rules during WWII. It is possible that parts of the Charvoz-Roos early slide rules were supplied by the U.S. slide rule manufacturer Acu-Rule as many parts are identical with other brands of the time. Roos began distributing Charvoz drafting supplies by 1945. After the war, Roos Company merged with Charvoz Inc. into Charvoz-Roos Corporation on June 14, 1946 and began importing re-branded Relay/Ricoh slide rules from "Occupied Japan". The manufacturing plant in East Rutherford, New Jersey was sold in 1953 and the Charvoz-Roos Manufacturing Company was in receivership. Around 1954 the company became just Charvoz, and slide rules were imported from the German company Aristo. Early Roos and Charvoz-Roos slide rules were identical to Post 1442, 1447-D, 1452-D, 1462 and Henschel 2020. A Charvoz-Roos PSR-200 is identical to a Relay 403 and an Aristo 909 is branded with just 'Charvoz'. See the Aristo page for more Charvoz branded slide rules |
