Albert Nestler AG, a German firm located in Lahr, Germany and founded by Albert Nestler. His great grandson, Jürgen Nestler, in Hausach, Germany, is a major contributor to this gallery with many donations of slide rules from when the slide rule factory stopped production in 1978, exactly 100 years after its conception. In 1878 Albert Nestler made his own dividing engine for placing scales on stocks purchased from Dennert & Pape. By 1905 his company manufactured their own stock bodies as well. Prior to WWII, Nestler was shipping slide rules to 60 countries - see Nestler Country Family Tree. Additional pictures of the Nestler factory and modern German exhibits are displayed at the end of this gallery page and on the Historical Photos,People with Slide Rules gallery.

Albert Nestler Facilities 1878, 1911, 1921 and 1937 Nestler Factory in Lahr, Germany 1956, rebuilt post WWII. Note: In 1901-1902 only Albert's Initials were on the slide rule. In 1955, 2-digit model numbers were replaced with 4-digit numbers and only 'NESTLER' is used, in place of Albert Nestler AG, in the branding of slide rules. |
Albert Nestler Mannheim with A.N. logo c1901 ISRM 22.02.12.03 Box is marked "Dr, Franz London, Breslau" - Franz London (1863-1917) was a math professor of the University of Bonn, and father of the physicist Fritz Wolfgang London (1900-1954) one of the most distinguished scientists on the Duke University faculty, and was an internationally recognized theorist in Chemistry, Physics and the Philosophy of Science. He was born in Breslau, Germany (written on sleeve) and died in Durham, North Carolina. It's likely that Fritz used his father's slide rule while at the University of Munich (LMU). Fritz London and his younger brother Heinz cracked the decades-long mystery of superconductivity. In his honor, the Fritz London Memorial Prize was created posthumously and has become one of the most important international awards in low-temperature physics. This slide rule was found at the estate sale of Fritz London's son, Frank, in Durham NC, so three generations owned this specimen.More on Fritz London at wikipedia |

Albert Nestler No.14 Modified For Bitumen And Soap Emulsion Proportions REF |
Albert Nestler No.14 Modified For Bitumen And Soap Emulsion Proportions Made in Germany Note: "Railroad Track" divisions and lamination screws The owner of this early Nestler slide rule overlayed a paper scale onto the stock to calculating the proportion of Bitumeun and Soap (emulsifier). Front Scale (Modified): 25cm // % OF BITUMEN (C) [ LBS OR KGS OF BITUMEN (B) ] LBS OR KGS OF BITUMEN AND SOAP SOLUTION(A) || 27.4cm Back Scale: [ S, lg, T ] Well: 28-53cm Back: Equivalents (in German) Original owner: Unknown Archive - Scan by Andreas Fassbender Collection. Note: Bitumen is the oldest known thermoplastic material in use today. Its usefulness and appeal derive from its simple thermoplastic property of being a thin liquid at high temperature and a virtual solid at ambient temperature. The main components of the emulsion are asphalt (bitumen) and water. Emulsions come in different grades but typically contain between 55 and 75% asphalt. In addition to the asphalt and water, asphalt emulsions contain 0.1-2% of an emulsifier or 'soap' which functions to stabilize the emulsion. Bitumens are produced by distillation of crude oil during petroleum refining, and also occur naturally. The major use (about 80%) of bitumens is for road paving; other uses include roofing, waterproofing, sealing and painting. Asphalt Emulsion Manufacturers Association (AEMA) |

Nestler Nr.20/3 "Kiel" Kriegsmarine REF Andreas Faßbender (photo above) is a collector and contributor to ISRM. He is Mechanical engineer currently working in the product management of a grease manufacturer. His passion for collecting slide rules began in 2019 with this Nr. 20 "Kiel" and the instructions from Albert Nestler, which he found in his father's estate. He now specializes in the models and history of Albert Nestler. |

A custom data table with, among other things, special information on fuels, fuel oil-fired boilers, as well as electrical lines. Expanded description of the "Kiel" 20/3 slide rules, its scales and operation. Scan contributed by Andreas Faßbender, son of the original owner, Jakob Faßbender (in English: Fassbender) . Andreas writes: "This slide rule was manufactured according to the specifications of the German Navy for Unteroffizier training at the Naval School in Kiel. The slide rule presented here belonged to my father, Jakob Faßbender, (23.12.1920, to 06.12.2009).. He served in the Kriegsmarine from 01.10.1939 until 08.05.1945. During this time, he underwent several courses at various locations of the Kiel Naval School. His last command took him on 18.11.1944 to the 2nd Submarine Training Division at Gotenhafen. Here he and his comrades were trained for duty on a Type XXI submarine. From my point of view the fate has meant it twice well with him. On the one hand it came for him to no more front deployment. (The submarine weapon was in the Second World War the weapon type with the highest loss rate.). Secondly, he survived the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff, but that is another story. The exact history and individual stations of this slide rule I can no longer exactly trace. It can be assumed that the slide rule was produced at the end of the Second World War. A clue to this is provided by the absence of the nickel silver screws at the ends of the scales. A detail I will discuss later. However, the good state of preservation indicates that it must have found its way to the Rhineland, the home of our family, shortly thereafter." This slide rule was manufactured according to the specifications of the German Navy for Unteroffizier training at the Naval School in Kiel. These specimens turn out to be rather rare today. The teaching material for the subject mathematics is described in chapter 3. "The Slide Rule." |

Albert Nestler No.27 Präzision (precision), post 1938 REF Robert Drury writes: "I inherited a slide-rule belonging to my father when he passed away. The cardboard case, which feels quite strong to the touch, was wrapped in black plastic electing tape to protect the case from general ware and tear and has my 1965 address on it.". (continued on right). |
Albert Nestler No.27 Präzision (precision), post 1938 From 1938 catalog: "It is important to note that the word 'precision' does not carry the name because it is more accurate than other varieties of slide rules, but it has a great sensitivity through the double divisions. Always traced to 25cm and then again from the left index (25cm) ". What this means that the scales are wrapped to give the equivalent length as a standard 10 inch [25 cm] slide rule. Made in Germany - 18cm X 3cm X 1cm. Made of Mahagony with celluloid laminations. Screws on ends for holding down laminations. Front Scale: 6.5in, L(0-5), L(5-10) // C(1-10), B(1-3.3) [ B(1-3.3), CI(10-3.3), CI(3.3-1), B(3.3-10)] B(3.3-10), S || K(1-13.2), K(13-1000 Back Scale: [ S1, S2, S&T, T ] Cursor: Hairlines extened to tabs on top and bottom edges. Back: Equivalents in German language. Archive- Photos by Robert Drury, belonged to his father. (cont'd from left) " I remember my father give a demo, but I have forgotten all. I can only speculate as to where my father acquired the item, either he picked it up when in Germany/Berlin at the end of WWII. Or my father may have inherited it from his father, who was a draughtsman / surveyor building Airdromes in Kenya and elsewhere under the British Empire. My grandfather was brought up in New Zealand, worked in Kenya, spoke fluent Swahili, fought in West Africa Rifles during WWII." |
