Eye-Saver Yellow |
Pickett was an American manufacturer of slide rules characterized by all metal construction. The founders, Roswell Colvert Pickett and Arthur F. Eckel started out making all-metal slide rules in 1944 using magnesium and later evolved to aluminum as aluminum alloys became more machinable. Pickett slide rules were chosen to be used by the Apollo astronauts on their mission to the moon, as they were lighter than their wood core counter parts.
Picket used a photo print on their slide rules, rather trhan being engine divided. A close up of one of Pickett artwork plates for the Texas Speed Rule is shown on the right, courtesy of Gary Rourke.
Picketts are remembered by many later-day alumni for their characteristic yellow 'eye saver' color. Pickett also produced all-plastic low-end slide rules in the waning days of the their life. When the company folded with the rest of the industry, the slide rules were going to be sold as scrap metal to Mexico, but were rescued by Dick Schwartzer and later sold to collectors over the last 25 years. There are thousands of the plastic Pickett models hiding in warehouses waiting to be slowly feed into the collector market. |

Charlie secured a position in 1964 at the Oak Ridge Nationall Laboratory Y-12 Plant, where he developed computational and experimental techniques for analyzing the nuclear criticality safety of fissionable materials. He took advantage of the Educational Assistance Program offered by Union Carbide Corporation's Nuclear Division to begin work on a PhD in physics at the University of Tennessee, which he completed in 1972. He transferred from Y-12 to the Plasma Theory Section of the ORNL Thermonuclear Division. He developed and used a variety of computational programs to advance the exploration of the behavior of magnetically confined plasmas. He made three visits to the Soviet Union as a participant in US-USSR scientific exchanges, including a two-month stint as a visiting scientist at the Kurchatov Institute. In 1987 Charlie transferred to the Toroidal Confinement Physics Section, working with the spectroscopy group to measure and interpret impurity behavior and infer plasma parameters such as ion and electron temperature. In 1990, when national funding for fusion research was reduced, Charlie returned to nuclear criticality safety, serving as head of ORNL's program in that area until he retired in 1994. He continued to work as a consultant on all aspects of nuclear criticality safety until 2012 and was a member of the American Nuclear Society and the American Physical Society. For nearly 20 years, he was the proud owner of owner of N2606X, a Cessna P206 Stationair, holding a commercial pilot certificate and was a Certified Flight Instructor Instrument (CFII). |

He eventually was admitted to Swarthmore College, a small Quaker liberal arts college with an excellent Engineering Department, graduating in 1951. He continued his studies at MIT, and then went to work in the aerospace industry. Tosh loved helicopters and worked primarily in helicopter rotor design. He worked briefly with Kaig Kurkjian on the HK1 aircraft and worked for Vertol Corporation until it was purchased by Boeing in 1960. He closed out his professional career at Boeing Rotorcraft Systems in Ridley Park, PA. He also had a passion for teaching and taught at Swarthmore College, Drexel University and at Widener University. His daughter, Elizabeth, writes :"I am sure the Pickett was his favorite slide rule. He must have had one at work and one at home because I don't think I ever saw his desk at home with out a yellow slide rule on it." Expanded biography |

After graduation, it was put to work for a short time calculating tensile, yield, compression and torsion test results at the Chevrolet Motor Division central laboratory located at the Detroit Forge. A USAF career followed shortly thereafter and the old Pickett lounged around in its case for decades, being overcome by calculators & computers. Jeff writes: " I recently re-discovered my slide rule during a spring cleaning, it deserves a better life at the Slide Rule Museum." The photograph is of Jeff and his wife, Carol, from a 2009 F-111 aircrew reunion in Fort Worth, TX. |

Belonged to her father O.R. Davis. Oliver Reeves Davis was born March 6, 1924 in Garfield, Georgia. He graduated from high school in 1940 and worked in Nashville, Tennessee, and Savannah, Georgia, until he was old enough to enlist in the U.S. Navy as an Aviation Cadet in 1942. He earned his wings and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps on September 14, 1943. During flight training at Naval Air Station-Dallas in 1943, he met Maribelle M. McLaurine and were married in 1944. He earned his carrier qualification and served as a flight instructor during WWII. His career included tours of duty in China, Korea, Japan and Vietnam. Reeves was assigned to several night fighter squadrons. With VMF(N)-513 squadron, he is credited with the first confirmed nighttime kill of a MiG-15 in Korea while flying his F3D-2 Skynight. While serving in Vietnam as G-4 of the 3rd MAF (1968-69), He flew emergency flare planes at night, supporting helicopter that picked up reconaissance teams out of the bush. He wrote, "I first went to war as a fighter pilot, packing four 20mm cannons in a 450-knot fighter plane, but to me that was never as satisfying as finding a place in the jungle, at night with lots of help, and dropping flares to light a place where another pilot and crew could land and pickup a wounded fellow Marine to bring him out safely." He retired after 30 years of active service with the rank of Colonel. Looking back on his career he wrote, “There were hard times, scary times, anxious times, and fun times, but most of all they were all Good Times. I was then and still am proud of my service to my country, and would do it again in a minute.” His decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and many other commendations. Reeves earned an MBA from the University of Texas-Dallas. |

Front Scale: C, CI, A, AF, L, FA, LL2, LL1, DS, DT, M Back Scale: C, S, ST, T, Fractions-Decimal Donated by Mike Medlock, Greenwood, Indiana As Mike prepared to enter Purdue in 1962, his brother Allen was completing his B.S. in Mathematics - also at Purdue. His brother decided a great gift for his younger brother as he began his college career would be a slide rule. Just to be different he decided to purchase a circular slide rule, certainly a oddity at the time. Mike used the slide rule throughout his college career and was amused by the odd looks from fellow engineering students. He graduated with a B.S. Chem. Eng. from Purdue University 1967. |

Pickett No.120 Narrow Stock Note: First design of one piece injection molded stock and slide. Made in USA by Pickett. Front Scale: K, A [ B, T Cot, S Cos, CI, C ] D, L Gift of Laurent V. (Larry) Hodes, who used this in school. Larry writes: "I was born 1947 in Newark, NJ, and was raised in Westfield, NJ. I first used a slide rule in high school chemistry and continued using it at MIT, where I studied engineering, and at Bell Laboratories, Holmdel, NJ. The two things I most liked about using slide rules were that in doing computations, slide rules kept me always aware of orders of magnitude, and bolstered my confidence in being able to interpolate accurately. My subsequent work with digital computers, while facilitating my analytic work (particularly modeling systems), benefited from my having grown up with a slide rule. The photo of me with my wife Enid Holzichter Hodes is from 2005. Enid also used a slide rule way back in high school chemistry at Nutley (NJ) High. She went on to be a college English major and pursued a career as a writer and editor." Her father, Gerard Holzrichter's slide rule is in the PIC/Thornton gallery. |

Peter D. Eickenberry Sr. writes "The Post Versalog 1460 was my personal slide rule that I acquired from another student while I was in high school 1961-1964. I used it while I was at the University of Michigan (taking engineering), while I worked in the engineering department at Lockheed Shipbuilding, and after joining the Coast Guard, during my Coast Guard career. (34 years) I only stopped using it when affordable had held scientific calculators became readily available. However it had a career before mine. The person I bought it from said he got it from his father who had used it for many years. Some of the others I used occasionally but most were purchased because I realized that slide rules were going to be obsolete in the age of desktop computers that could do the math much faster and much more accurately.". Saenz Front Scale: √, √, A [ C, ∛ 1, ∛ 2, ∛ 3 ] D Back Scale: K, D [ B, √, √, CI, C ] ∛ 1, ∛ 2, ∛ 3 Photo courtesy of Brian Sheltra, Shawnee, Kansas. Note: The Accuraspeed Slide Rule was designed by E.G. Saenz, Jr. of Corpus Christi, Texas, was a physics and mathematics teacher at Flour Bluff High School. who began to market a slide rule he designed for students competing in the Texas University Intrascholastic League slide rule competitions. However, because it had the potential of hurting sales from L.R. Ridgeway Entreprises who commisioned Pickett to make the Texas Speed Rule Model 905-ES, Ridgeway was able to get the State of Texas to ban the use of the 505 Accuraspeed Slide Ruleunder the premise that it was not a standard slide rule. Saenz sued the UIL for antitrust violations under the Sherman Act. (1972 1973-2 Trade Cases 74,803 E. G. SAENZ, Plaintiff-Appellant, v. UNIVERSITY INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUE et al., Defendants-Appellees). Saenz lost his case in the Federal Court of Appeals ruling in 1973 as the State was allowed immunity. The 8 page manual "How to use the Accuraspeed model Slide Rules" was © by E.G. Saenz 30Nov69, Library of Congress ref: A136108. |

Pickett N600-T Log Log ISRM 22.05.06.29.X Dr. Jerry L. Sweet, (1939-2019) Alongside his "Jesus First" pin, this model slide rule was always in the shirt pocket of "Doc Sweet" Professor Emeritus of mechanical engineering technology at Colorado State University - Pueblo, CO (and a mentor to Michael Konshak, the curator of ISRM, who is an alumnus of CSU-Pueblo, class of 1982). Jerry taught courses in drafting, computer-aided design (CAD) and manufacturing. He was coordinator of the coop and internship program for all engineering technology students. (Cont'd on right) |

Ulrich Collection. (Cont'd) He served with Big Red 1 in the US Army after High School. He returned to Pueblo to attend Pueblo Jr. College and received his degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology. He went on to work in industry and eventually started teaching drafting in Pueblo's colleges for the next 40 years. During that time he went on to receive his masters and doctorate degrees from Colorado State University and was honored for his development of a new way to process quinoa seeds for drought growing areas. He always considered himself a 'facilitator of learning' instead of a teacher, and could be found asking his favorite question to everyone he met: 'What do you want to be when you grow up?'. He was always ready with a suggestion or contact to help. In addition to his education career, he was a Chinchilla Ranch Supervisor, a leader in the P-CAT, the American Ag, and the Huerfano-Pinon Coalition movements, spoke before national congressional committees, was a 4-H participant and leader, developed a manufacturing process for canola, created unique educational displays for the Colorado State Fair High Tech Building and countless other projects for education and industry. He enlisted in the Coast Guard after high school where he started his career in electronics. Dusty worked for Motorola in the Phoenix area for 33 years. He went to ASU in the evenings until he earned his engineering degree. Dusty was a ham radio operator W7ITM who enjoyed building his own equipment. He was an active member of the Motorola Amateur Radio Club of Arizona (MARCA) He presented "Home Brew SWR Bridge" during his last year at age 78. Of the mmany slide rules donated to ISRM, by his wife, Nancy, this is one he used quite often in his Amatuer radio hobby. You can see his other personal slide rule, A Hemmi 256 Radio Communications, and others from his collection in the ISRM galleries. |

The school's daytime diploma program cost $7,400 and the evening certificate program cost $4,900. Competition from state-supported technical schools and the school's inconvenient location in a densely packed neighborhood made it unattractive to students, It closed its doors and sold its building in 1998. |

The contestants had to complete a series of calculations in 30 minutes. As the competition was timed there was a premium on speed but the marking system also required high accuracy. If the answer was accurate to three place of decimals, three points were awarded but if the answer was off by more than 2 places in the third significant figure no marks were awarded. Whilst other rules were allowed, and were used, the Pickett "Texas speed rule" was most popular. Ref: Ron Manley |

Pickett 1010-ES Duplex - Transitional Model c1953 ISRM 14.01.10.48 |
Pickett 1010-ES Duplex - Transitional Model Made in USA by Pickett and Eckel in Alhambra by Cal-Pan Co. using Pickette artwork. This is an aluminum stock transitional model which coincides with design changes to the slide rules, as well as the leather sleeve, with the move from Chicago, Illinois to Alhambra, California. It is the first time the -ES or -T appears as part of the model number artwork. Note:Round black logo. First appearance of Aluminum stock with tension spring on upper stock (to keep slide falling out). Rounded braces as was used with magnesium stocks, extended nylon cursor bars, grooved flat lens. All part of a cost reduction. The radii on the upper and lower stock corners were soon discontinued in favor of square corners, another cost reduction in machining time. Front Scale (Artwork #74): K, A [ B, ST, T Cot, S Cos, C ] D, DI Back Scale (Artwork #271): DF [ CF, CIF, CI, C ] D, L Note: The sleeve shown is a very rare transitional design, and is the first attempt at Pickett making leather sleeves, after the tacky rubber type which was introduced with other magnesium models in 1948. The rubber model retained moisture and added to the corrosion of the magnesium stocks. Notice the 'D' ring used for leather belt loops, to compete with K&E and Post sleeves. In 1953-54 John Pickett formed Pacific Leather Works to make slide rule cases which had plastic inner liners. Gift of the Bill Wehrend Collection, Palo Alto, California. |
