Who Actually Manufactured Frederick Post Brand Slide Rules? (24kb PDF) by Paul Ross

Frederick Post Co., Chicago, founded 1890, was a distributor of US brand slide rules, and other engineering supplies, which were typically relabeled standard products from well-known manufacturers from around the world. At one time or another Post brand slide rules were made by Dennert & Pape (became Aristo), Nestler, A.W. Faber (became Faber-Castell), Hemmi, Lawrence Engineering Service, Charvoz-Roos, Grafton Plastics (who sold to Bruning, Deietzgen, and Compass) and Gilson. Post also sold branded slide rules from Richardson, Vicari, Boucher, Sexton, Halden, Chandler, Ritow and Winslow. Richardson was a supplier to Post in 1912 and Post began importing Sun Hemmi slide rules with the Post brand around 1920. Until about 1932, some Post models were made by a variety of German manufacturers, including by Koch, Huxhold & Hannemann from 1925 to 1930. During. WWII, Charvoz-Roos and Lawrence supplied slide rules were branded with the Post name. After WWII, frederick Post again worked with Sun Hemmi to rebrand slide rules From 1945 to April, 1952 they were labeled "Made In Occupied Japan" (MIOJ). After April, 1952 slide rules were just stamped "Made In Japan" as before the war. Post was acquired by Teledyne in December, 1967. Some Versalogs began to be labeled with the Teledyne brand in late 1969. The Versalog 1460 made specifically for Post by Hemmi is their most well known and collected slide rule.Teledyne Post, in Des Plaines, Illinois, as a slide rule company, was disbanded in 1992.

.
Wallace Kane, born in Wisconsin (1930), used this slide rule early in his education. He attended Lawrence College in Appelton, Wisconsin. and later he enlisted in the Air Force. He was given duties as a musician, stationed at Keflavik, Iceland. He again pulled out his slide rule to obtain his masters degree in physics from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, WI. After graduation he worked at Lawrence Radiation Laboratory at Livermore (now LLNL) where he married fellow physicist Ruth Mary Farwell Kilby (later: Moira Kane) (1921-2007) (Ruth also has a slide rule on display at ISRM). The couple relocated to the Puget Sound area in 1973 to work as a physicist for the Navy at Keyport, Washington for the next 33 years where he retired at age 75.

Peter D. Eickenberry Sr. writes "The Post Versalog 1460 was my personal slide rule that I acquired from another student while I was in high school 1961-1964. I used it while I was at the University of Michigan (taking engineering), while I worked in the engineering department at Lockheed Shipbuilding, and after joining the Coast Guard, during my Coast Guard career. (34 years) I only stopped using it when affordable had held scientific calculators became readily available. However it had a career before mine. The person I bought it from said he got it from his father who had used it for many years. Some of the others I used occasionally but most were purchased because I realized that slide rules were going to be obsolete in the age of desktop computers that could do the math much faster and much more accurately.".

The younger picture was 1942. Carl was working at the War Department at Wright Field at the Aircraft Radio Laboratory. He was paid $3600/year for a 48 hour week, as part of the Antioch University Work Study Program. He returned to Antioch College to .graduate with a BS in Mathematics. He was drafted into the Navy in 1943, Went to the Radio Technician Program and served in the battle of Guam in WWII. His sons, Les and Keith, say that their dad told them that the Atomic bombs dropped on Japan saved his life. The second B/W picture was taken in 1959 as founder and president of Wiley Electronics specializing in radar and sundry microwave devices. The first color photo is Carl on radar range (Los Angeles) using commercial CT scanner to reconstruct images using Fourier transforms. The 2nd color photo is Carl receiving the IEEE Pioneer Award a few weeks before his passing in 1985 from pulmonary fibrosis. The Pioneer Award has been given annually since 1949 to an individual or team for "contributions significant to bringing into being systems that are still in existence today."

1964 US Patent 3,196,436; Full Patent PDF, The Clipper Ships of Space.(PDF), Carl's name on sleeve

Carl Atwood Wiley 1918-1985 Holder of 22 Patents involving Radar, Microwave Radiometry, Antennas and Piezo Electric Devices. Elected Fellow of the IEEE. Carl discovered the piezo electric properties of Barium Titanate crystals in 1942. Barium Titanate is widely used in phonograph pickup transducers, acoustic door openers etc. Carl holds the original patent on Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). "Pulsed Doppler Radar Methods and Means" previously secret eventually awarded to Carl in 1964. Carl along with Dr Alan Love developed the first spherical microwave radar mapping antennas for the Army. Carl then proposed their use In radio astronomy. Carl's early spherical antenna proposals eventually became today's Arecibo Radio Telescope. In May 1951, "Astounding Science Fiction Stories" published an article, The Clipper Ships of Space. (PDF) This article written by, Carl A Wiley under the pseudonym, Russel Saunders was the first to seriously propose spaceships powered by what we now call Solar Sails. Carl's important insight was that minuscule accelerations applied continuously over an extended period of time could, like interest accumulating in a bank account, eventually result in driving the Solar Sail to high velocities. Carl's math proved the feasibility of his idea, he then proposed how to build a solar sail vehicle and showed methods how to navigate the Solar Sail around the solar system. After years of hard work and private support, Ann Druyan, Carl Sagan's wife, and the The Planetary Society of Pasadena CA successfully launched LightSail 2 on 23 July 2019. LightSail2, a working, proof of concept solar sail demonstrated that Solar Sails have a future in spaceflight. See more on Carl at Wikipedia
