The C-Thru Ruler Company was founded in 1939 in Bloomfield, Connecticut and specialized in transparent plastic rulers and templates.
They designed a line of inexpensive (value-priced) folded sheet (film) printed plastic slide rules.
Their market continues in the modern era and have products in stores like Hobby Lobby and Michaels. Generic linear slide rules made by the Parisan Novelty Co.and Graphic Calculator Co, are very similar to the C-Thru designs and constructions, and I suspect they are all licensed (or the patent expired) off the Parisan Novelty Co. Patent US02,073,421 of 1937 by inventor/owner Joseph Komorous of Chicago.

Front Scale: K, A [ B, CI, C ] D, L Back Scale: None Donated by Pamela Lanier Wolfe Browne, Kernersville, North Carolina This slide rule belonged to Pamela Lanier Wolfe Browne (1948 - ). In 1966, she began working as a secretary for the Onondaga County Department of Transportation, Division of Engineering, Syracuse, NY. She studied drafting in her spare time and on April 26, 1969 she took the Engineering Aid I civil examination. When she received her grade she was informed that she was the first woman in NY State to pass the exam and fill the position. On October 24, 1970 she passed the Engineering Aid II exam. She used this slide rule 1969-1971 while working on highway projects in the office. After much pleading with her boss, the Transportation Commissioner, he finally permitted her to work in the field with fellow male engineers conducting traffic counts. Note: Pamela is the widow of Harry Edson Browne (1933-2006). They were married in 1985. Harry Browne was an inspirational speaker who wrote 19 books that sold more than 2 million copies. In 1996 and 2000 he was the nominee of the Libertarian Party for President of the United States. |

Notes: The heart of the Variable Scale is a high precision triangular spring whose coils act as calibrating lines. When extended, all coils are equally spaced. A second spring carries numerical markings for each 10th coil of the triangular spring. Easy to use, the Variable Scale makes computations directly -- without conversion -- on graphs, curves and recordings. Expandable for any ratio, any setting, it is used on graphical work where reading, plotting and interpolating are required. The use extends the Variable Scale's springs by sliding a hairline over three fixed, engraved scales: 1) an Inch scale that indicates the number of inches extended; 2) a Reciprocal scale that identifies the number of coils per inch; and 3) a Logarithmic scale that indicates the logarithm of the extension. On an October 4, 1938 letter from A.W.Keuffel to W.L.E.Keuffel, AWK writes:"Mr. Misik advises that one of our employees, Mr. Katzenmair, informed him that the makers of the INDECO Rule, which was made in Bridgeport, Ct., have gone out of business. Mr. Katzenmair received this information from someone acquianted with the owners of INDECO, who advised him that the owner had spent all of his wife's money in promoting this rule without success and had finally given up making them." Kolesch and Company began in the late 1790s with Edmund March Blunt (1770-1862), who was a map maker in Massachusetts in 1793 and moved to New York in 1802.9 His shop in New York sold nautical books and charts, as well as pre-owned nautical instruments. Upon his retirement in 1822, his sons Edmund and George William took over the store by 1824, creating the firm E. & G.W. Blunt. This firm began offering nautical books, charts, and instruments as well as surveying equipment. Edmund began attempts to build a dividing engine in 1831 and successfully created an automated machine that was put into operation by 1857. His Automatic Dividing Engine is one of the first built in the United States, and E. & G. W. Blunt used the machine to manufacture theodolites for the Coast Survey instead of having to import them. The company remained in the family until 1868 at which time the firm, by then known as Blunt & Co., was passed to German immigrants, Eckel & Imhoff, and then F. Eckel. Finally, in 1885, Heinrich Adolph Kolesch (1855-1903) purchased the firm. Kolesch & Company, at 138 Fulton Street, New York, New York, remained in existence until 1947, though it was dissolved by proclamation at that time so it is not clear when they stopped selling instruments. In the early 1900s through roughly 1920, Kolesch sold drawing instruments and materials, surveying instruments, and accessories including slide rules. These rules are described in their catalogs from those years, which can still be found today, as well as in their publication, How To Use Slide Rules. Their slide rules were engraved with the Kolesch name, but were likely all imported. While never stated explicitly, these rules appear likely to have been manufactured by Albert Nestler in Germany. The Master Electric Company was founded in 1920 by Everett Larsh and headquartered in Dayton, Ohio The company built electric motors, electric gear-motors, motor controls and motor brakes. They supplied private industry as well as the U.S. government. In 1958 the company merged with Reliance Electric Co. of Cleveland, Ohio. Mead Corporation, Hulman Building, Dayton, Ohio. In 1846, Daniel Mead founded the Mead Corporation in Dayton, Ohio. The firm originally manufactured paper, but the company dramatically expanded its product line during the twentieth century. By the time of Daniel Mead's death in 1891, the Mead Corporation was one of the largest paper producers in the United States, with paper mills in Kingsport, Tennessee, Brunswick, Georgia, and Escanaba, Michigan, as well as several plants in Ohio. More Mead Corp. History. During the 1980s, a national recession during the 1980s caused the company to sell off many of its affiliated industries and streamlined its products and services. The company primarily manufactured paper and continued to participate in the electronic storage industry. The Mead Corporation is currently known as MeadWestvaco. |

The D. Van Nostrand book company, was founded by Dutch American David van Nostrand (1811-1886) (see expanded Biography) in New York City, in 1848. In 1869, "Van Nostrand's Engineering Magazine" was founded, followed later by "The American Chemical Journal". Van Nostrand Publishing also became involved with the building of the Brooklyn Bridge by publishing John A. Roebling's "Long and Short Span Railway Bridges".During the late 19th century, They published books on slide rules as early as 1884.Van Nostrand Publishing initiated a book series on Science. The Science series was edited by George Plympton, professor of physics and engineering at the prestigious Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. The famous Van Nostrand Science Series had as many as 127 titles when it was completed in 1902. It was claimed that the Van Nostrand Science series helped educate a generation of engineers. The series was still being sold in the 1920s. Prior to WWII, they rebranded OEM slide rules.and packaged them as a point of sales item to sell their slide rule instruction books, such as Speed and Fun with Figures (1922). |

John L. Novotni (1893-1966), a blacksmith of Czech descent, is listed in the 1920 census as working in a foundry in Delaware County, Penn. In the 1910s, he worked at an automobile and wagon repair shop in Oaklyn, N.J., with Andrew W. Kelly and John Hornyak, who received a patent (U.S. Patent 1,210,488 issued January 2, 1917) for this design and sold it as the Kelkay Weight Slide Rule by 1920. By 1922 Kelly and Hornyak and Novotni were selling other celluloid rules, such as the Paper Box Board Rule. By 1929 Novotni was selling slide rules under the name of the Novotni Slide Rule Company and was having the rules made of Bakelite. It appears he lived in Chester, PA at that time. In 1937, he moved to Media, Pa. According to Novotni's daughter, Evelyn Novotni Bond, steel companies continued to purchase the Weight Slide Rule until 1992. ![]() ![]() ![]() | The Parisian Novelty Company at 3510 S. Western Avenue in Chicago, was originally established in 1898, by Louis L Joseph, the American born son of a German immigrant. He produced a variety of novelties that could be used in advertising, many based on designs by inventor Joseph Komorous ( ?-1945), who was the manufacturing superintendent. J.Komorous has at least 18 U.S. patents, starting in 1915 through 1938, which include face powder compacts, watch fobs, office products, campaign buttons, and his slide rule Patent US02,073,421 of 1937. This patent is the basis for generic linear slide rules made by the Graphic Calculator Co, Whitehead & Hoag,, and C-Thru as the designs and construction are the same, made of thin 0.5mm(0.020inch) thick plastic. They were either licensed or the patent had expired. The Parisian Novelty Company Building was abandoned in 2008. See Collecting Vintage Compacts for a great history of their company. Joseph Komorous died in 1945 and their is evidence his son Louis J. Komorous filled in at Parisan Novelty as L.J. has a patent issued in 1952. He served from 1942-45 in World War II as a navigator on a B-24 based at Horsham St. Faith in England, flying 26 bombing missions over Europe. He was discharged as a 1st Lieutenant. He married his wife Marilyn in 1945, then went on to graduate from the University of California at Berkeley with a BA in Astronomy. From 1950 through 1989, Richard was employed by Douglas Aircraft Corporation in El Segundo, CA, Boeing in Seattle, WA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Canada, CA. While at Boeing he graduated in 1963 with a MA in Mathematics from the University of Washington in Seattle. He wrote a book on the early Portuguese explorations of the late 15th and early 16th century, which combined his interest in history with his WWII navigational experience and his career in the field of military and commercial satellite applications. |

Founded by Arthur Frederick Eckel - United States. Inventor and manufacturer. Originally of Chicago. Cofounded R.C.Pickett & A.F. Eckel Company in 1943 with Ross C.Pickett to make aluminum slide rules. while residing in Evanston, Illinois. He left the company in 1948, which was then renamed P&E. A 1949 U.S. patent #2466983 was issued to A.F. Eckel with Louise Pickett being the assignee. Has several other United States patents (US #2615630) and his wife Myrtle Elizabeth (Scott) Eckel is shown as the attorney. Eckel later formed Precision Scale Company located in Phoenix, Arizona, producing all-metal slide rules to limited markets. George Washington University in Washington D.C. shows an A.F. Eckel as having graduated there in 1922. His estate sale in Phoenix produced several unfinished slide rules. |

![]() Each month, thousands of subscribers received a small blue box about the size of a videocasette containing some material such as nylon thread or dinosaur bones. The box contained a yellow booklet explaining the topic for that month, along with the pieces and supplies needed to cover the topic. Some kits would teach about a specific topic, such as coal or optical illusions. Other kits would provide parts to build items such as a small spectrograph, telescope, or pinhole camera. In addition to the monthly subscription, some kits were available for individual purchase, such as a "soilless gardening" unit which provided seeds, plant food, and instructions in hydroponics. The Things of Science Club was started by Watson Davis, editor-in-chief of Science Service, because editors served by the service often asked for samples of the things the syndicate wrote about. The initial focus of the program was newspaper editors, but it soon shifted to young people. By 1946 the Science Service estimated that half of its subscribers were school groups and science clubs, and the other half were individuals.[5] Membership in the club was limited to a few thousand because some of the "things", such as dinosaur bones, were hard to come by." There were three slide rule computational units. Unite 123 in 1958, Unit 209 in 1958, and Unit 272 in 1963. These used off-the shelf slide rules. Jonathan Small, his Grandson, writes: "The only tidbit I know about the Pocket Calculator is that my grandmother mentions in her diaries from the 1920s a number of occasions when she and my grandfather would spend an evening assembling calculators to fill orders. Gilbert Small was employed by an engineering firm by the name of Worcester with offices in Waltham and Boston." (Continued on right) | (Cont'd) "He was frequently required to make trips to Portland, ME, to inspect a bridge there (a bridge known as the 'Million Dollar Bridge', which has since been torn down). As a small child I knew my grandfather had invented the 'Small Pocket Calculator' because he had quite a few in stock in his home in Wayland, Massachusetts. His work was in the field of architecture for which he regularly commuted from Wayland (a suburb) to Boston by train. He was instrumental in designing the colonial style home (also in Wayland) where my parents brought up their family and lived well into their senior years, Sometimes my grandfather's work involved dismantling old historical New England homes. When this was the case he frequently salvaged and recycled useful building materials. In the case of my childhood home, this included massive exposed hand hewn beams in the living room. You could see the marks where someone had shaped the beams one axe blow after another. He also recuperated broad planks of red pine paneling and vintage bricks for that house. His architectural work prompted him to invent the 'Small Pocket Calculator'. He designed it in an era before wristwatches had come into vogue and it was common for men to carry a pocket watch. My grandfather wanted to make a calculator that would have the same small, round and convenient size and shape." |

Spirule is the invention of the late Walter Richard Evans (1920-1999), who was a noted American control theorist and the inventor of the root locus method in 1948. He received his B.E. in Electrical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis in 1941 and his M.E. in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1951. Evans worked as an engineer at several companies, including General Electric, Rockwell International, and Ford Aeronautic Company. He was the recipient of the 1987 American Society of Mechanical Engineers Rufus Oldenburger Medal and the 1988 AACC's Richard E. Bellman Control Heritage Award electrical engineer who developed the "Root-Locus Method" for designing automatic control systems. He then invented the Spirule to help "nail down specific points on the locus - to establish the gain to use and the exact natural frequency and damping that will result". This device was manufactured by Evans's company in the 60's, and 100,000 of them were actually shipped before personal computers took over.
