This American slide rule manufacturer was founded in 1885 by Eugene Dietzgen. The first manufacturing company opened in 1893 producing T-squares, wooden triangles, drawing boards, hectograph inks, surveying instruments, blue print and Van Dyke papers, Dietzgen's historic line of engineering products. In 1908 the company acquired its own drafting instruments factory in Germany and introduced their "Lifetime Service Policy" on drafting Instruments. The company later OEM'ed slide rules from Faber-Castell and other engineering items and drafting instruments from Germany (Ecobra) and from Japan (Ricoh) for the American Market. Often mistaken for K&E slide rules, as many parts are interchangeable as the physical dimensions and construction are similar. The main factory and head office was in Chicago, Illinois, and branch offices were in New York, San Francisco, New Orleans, Pittsburgh and Los Angeles.

Dietzgen slide rules with aluminum stocks (such as the 1738 Multilog Type-M) were manufactured by Ecobra in Germany. Both companies were involved in their respective war efforts during WWII (Dietzgen was a US company, Ecobra a German one). After the war, Dietzgen began selling Ecobra rules as an exclusive branded U.S. distributer until the 1970s, when Dietzgen bought Ecobra. Ref: Bill Wheaton, a long-time Dietzgen employee, Dieter von Jezierski, and Eric Marcotte. Models with bamboo stocks (such as the 1737 DecimalTrig) were made by Ricoh.

This slide rule was acquired in Germany and used by Major Paul C. Allred, US Army. (1916 - 1979). Paul joined the Army on April 11, 1934. He served as a surveyor in the Infantry Artillery most of his career in the battles and campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, Central Europe, and Korea. He was awarded the Eamet Campaign Medal with 5 Bronze stars, Good Conduct Medal, WWII victory medal, Koren Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal with oak leaf cluster, and a National Defense Service Medal. He retired in 1962. He thenb worked as a surveyor for the North Carolina Departement of Transportation, Greesboro, until retirement in 1977. Sometime while working for the state he began using a Texas Instrument calculator, but still checked his answers on his trustworthy slide rule. (Paul was Pamela's Godmother's husband)
Note: Pamela Browne is the widow of Harry Edson Browne (1933-2006). Harry Browne was an inspirational speaker who wrote 19 books that sold more than 2 million copies. In 1996 and 2000 he was the nominee of the Libertarian Party for President of the United States. Pamela's personal slide rule, a Fullerton-Acu 1240, along with photo, may be seen in the Acumath gallery.

Original Owner: Harold J. Wise ( 1939-2016).
Gift of Susan H. Wise of Evanston, Illinos.
Harold J. Wise received his ME degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1962. He profoundly appreciated the real world experience he received in the co-op segments of UC's curriculum. He purchased his Dietzgen N1725 slide rule while on a co-op rotation at General Electric's Evendale facility in 1959. He went on to receive his MBA in Marketing and Production from Northwestern's Kellogg School of Business in 1964. Then, following active duty military service, he began his career at General Electric in the Aircraft Engine Division. In the early years of his career he completed the requirements for his P.E. designation, submitting his paper on "e;Strengthening the Engineering/Marketing Relationship."e; Following the time at GE, Harold worked as a marketing executive for several manufacturers of technical products. For more than a decade before retirement he was with United Conveyor Corporation in Waukegan, Illinois as Manager, Parts and Product Sales and also, for a period of time, as Director of Production. A source of pride and gratification for him was the decision of his oldest grandson to study Mechanical Engineering. Harold enjoyed retirement until he passed away in 2016.

Gift of David DeSpain,of Fort Worth, Texas.. He tells us about it in his own words:
"The slide rule was a high-school graduation present in 1964 for (Farmington (MO) Senior High School) from my parents Gaines Wagner (GW) and Linda DeSpain. It was ordered for them by Willard Vandegriff, a civil engineer and PE in Farmington. I believe the list price was $28.00 and Mr. Vandegriff got it for $20.00 through his suppliers. I used it at the University of Missouri-Rolla, formerly University of Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, now Missouri University Science and Technology (MUST). I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering in 1969. Later I used the slide rule at Columbia Broadcasting System (KMOX Radio in St. Louis), while in the US Army at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. Sometime in the mid-70's, I put together a kit scientific calculator from Sinclair, which had all the trig and log and exponential functions, and operated only in scientific notation. I retired from the Voice of America, or Broadcasting Board of Governors, in 2008, where I was their in-house expert on high power (100, 250, 500, and 1000 KiloWatt) ShortWave and MediumWave (AM) transmitters."

Valerie Christiansen writes: "My father H.M. Tommy Thompson, had this Dietzgen slide rule for many years. I remember it among his most important tools. ...He had his name all over it so no one would steal it.He taught me how to use it. My father was a Dining Room Steward for Atlantic Coastline, Sante Fe and later Amtrak railroads. He trasured his time at home.and would craerte many projects so he would not have to leave the house. He would be pleased that I found a home for it among people who still value the idea of a good project."

Gift of Bill R. Teer of Fairfax, Virginia, who used this in college and in his career.

Bill Graduated in 1955 from Texas A&M with a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering. His first job was with Westinghouse at the Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory in Pittsburgh. The lab's mission was (and is) to develop the reactors for the nuclear navy. He received an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh. and in 1964 worked 10 years for United Nuclear Corporation which sold uranium and manufactured reload fuel for civilian power reactors. Bill relocated Transnuclear, Inc. which was involved in the transport and storage of spent nuclear fuel and other radioactive materials. In 1991, he moved to Virginia to work for a DOE contractor on the Yucca Mountain Project, which was supposed to take title to all spent nuclear fuel from civilian and military reactors and permanently dispose of it in the Nevada desert. (Funding for this project was killed by Obama in 2008.) Bill retired in March of 2006 and has been cruising and playing competitive bridge since then with his wife of 59 years. Bill endowed a scholarship in the Robert G. Cochran Scholars Program for nuclear engineering undergraduates at Texas A&M University.

Gift of Edward T. Wright of Odenton, Maryland
Edward Wright received his B.A. with Honors in Mathematics from Rhodes College (formerly Southwestern at Memphis) in 1968, followed by his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Notre Dame in 1973. Ed's thesis was on compact Kahler manifolds that admit Killing vector fields. After graduate school Dr. Wright was a visiting assistant professor at Notre Dame for one school year, then worked as an (applied) mathematician for the Department of Defense for 39 years. Ed retired 2014. Ed writes: "The only time I ever used a slide rule was in high school physics (1963/64). I started collecting them off of Ebay in the 2004/5 time period. I continue to marvel at how much was accomplished with these instruments. I am in the process of down sizing the modest collection that I have, and wanted them to go some place that will preserve this part of the technology."

Original Owner(s): Sergeant (USMC) Robert J. Chicca of Bonita, California. a POW of the 1968 USS Pueblo incident with North Korea.
Gift of Edward T. Wright, Odenton, Maryland.
This slide rule belonged to USMC SSGT Robert J. Chicca, shown in the ohoto, who with the rest of the crew of the USS Pueblo (AGER-2), a signal intelligence ship, were attacked, and captured by North Korean forces on 23 January 1968, One sailor was killed in the attack. Crew members had their hands tied and were blindfolded, beaten, and prodded with bayonets. Pueblo was taken into port at Wonsan and the crew was moved twice to POW camps. The crew reported upon release that they were starved and regularly tortured while in North Korean custody. This treatment allegedly turned worse when the North Koreans realized that crewmen were secretly giving them "the finger" in staged propaganda photos They were held captive for 8 months before being released across the DMZ in December, 1968. The slide rule was also used by Roberts brother, Bill in school, while Robert was in the military. See Wickipedia entry

Mines Award

Dietzgen 1746 Original Cursor (1926)
The slide rule as above has a restored cursor, to replace the crumbling original shown on left. The early lens and metal lens brackets were retained, a SIC (Relay) cursor spacers were modified, drilled and tapped with 1-72 UNF threads, to accept new screws (K&E uses 1-72's). This gives this 'old soldier' a new life.

Gift of Linda N. Boclair, Voohees, New Jersey. Belonged to Spafford W. Schanck.

Original owner: Spafford W. Schanck.(1899-1985)used the slide rule during his career as a business owner and building contractor in Washington DC and later in the Matawan, New Jersey area where he owned and operated the Matawan Lumber Company and built the First Presbyterian Church. He served as Mayor for the borough of Matawan for just over seven years between 1951 and 1959. He was well liked and known for treating everyone with respect.
His stepdaughter, Linda (Newman) Boclair writes, " A little known yet interesting piece of history published in the local newspaper (Asbury Park Press) in 1952 was when Spafford defended women's rights to wear shorts in town as long as they were "decent". At the time the police were citing women seen in shorts in public. There was a reference in the article stating that wearing shorts was a sign of patriotism during World War I when there was a shortage of fabric. My step father may have used this fact to support his position."
Spafford retired with his wife Katherine to their 500-acre dairy farm in Virginia and later moved to New Jersey to be closer to his children. Katherine died in 2004.

Eugene Dietzgen Co. History - 1885-2002

Eugene Dietzgen was born in Uckerrath, Germany on May 6, 1862, he died in Chicago on December 1, 1929. Eugene was the eldest son of Joseph Dietzgen, a German tanner-turned-Communist who read Marx and joined the Revolution of 1848, which got him exiled from Germany. At age two Eugene was taken by his father to Tsarist Russia, where he was educated in the Russian language and in his father's trade, tannery. They both returned to Germany in 1868.

In 1881, Eugene's father sent him to America to escape the Kaiser's military draft and to hide some of his father's socialist literature; the literature had already landed Joseph in jail a few years before. Eugene was only 19 years old when he arrived in New York City. He began work with a German drafting company, and eventually moved to Chicago.

In Chicago Dietzgen started the Eugene Dietzgen Drafting Company, the company was founded on November 13, 1885 under the name of Luhring & Dietzgen. This partnership was succeeded by Eugene Deitzgen & Co. in 1891. Successor corporation under the name of Eugene Dietzgen Co. of Illinois occurred on February 3, 1893 and the present corporate company, Eugene Dietzgen Co. of Delaware was incorporated in Delaware on October 29, 1917. By 1906, Dietzgen had two manufacturing plants.

The company was noted for its production of slide rules, which Dietzgen started in 1898 after acquiring a patent from John Givan Davis Mack (1867-1924). His company's Mack Improved Mannheim Simplex Slide Rule sold from 1902 to 1912 for $4.50.

Dietzgen was heavily influenced by his father, one of Karl Marx's favorite philosophers. He provided his factory workers with many amenities not often found in the 19th century. These included separate bathrooms for men and women, open windowsills with flowers decorating the air, and a general atmosphere of a healthy working community. Dietzgen 's first wife could not bear him children; they divorced, and in 1912 Eugene moved to Zurich, Switzerland. There he met his second wife, Jansen, and they had three boys and three girls.

The company still exists, and its second building remains as a part of DePaul University, at the corner of Fullerton Avenue and Sheffield, in Chicago's once heavily German neighborhood of Lincoln Park. The original building still stands at 218 East 23rd Street, Chicago, operates today as Dietzgen Corporation, a privately held company. Ref: compleatsurveyor.com
